Just one more game left for each team in this Premier League season, right?
Well that might not be so. There's a possibility that Arsenal and Chelsea could finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored. That would mean they would have to play a game to determine who finishes in third place in the league this season and so automatically qualifies for the Champions League next season.
The Premier League does not use head-to-head games as a tiebreaker for teams so both of Chelsea's 2-1 wins over Arsenal this season would not be a factor in separating the teams.
From the Premier League handbook:
If at the end of the season either the league champions or the clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the board.
The top four as it stands.
So if for example, Arsenal beat Newcastle 3-2 on Sunday and Chelsea draw 1-1 with Everton then both Arsenal and Chelsea will be level on all tiebreakers, meaning they will face each other in a playoff game at a neutral venue.
Let the jokes about Arsenal petitioning the Premier League to create a trophy for the game commence.
