James Tarkowski only received a yellow card for a horror tackle on Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister in the Merseyside derby.

VAR checked the decision, and the replay clearly showed that the Everton defender’s tackle was at best reckless and dangerous, and that a red card should have been produced.

However, Paul Tierney, the VAR assistant for the match decided that the foul did not warrant a sending off, and the on-field decision remained.

Liverpool went on to win the match 1-0 thanks to a Diogo Jota goal in the second half, but Arne Slot did not hide his disappointment in the VAR decision in his post match press conference.

“Even people that are not liking Liverpool a lot, and they were all so clear and obvious what the decision should have been.

“There’s no need for me to comment on that. Was I surprised? No.”

This is not the first time that Tierney has been at the centre of a controversial decision involving Liverpool, and Slot’s predecessor Jurgen Klopp famously had an issue with the official.

After one particular game, the German marched up to the centre circle and told the referee exactly what he thought.

“I have no problems with any referees, only you.”

The Reds 1-0 victory puts them 12 points clear at the top of the table and it appears that it is only a matter of time before they clinch the Premier League title.

Everton face Arsenal in the early kick off this Saturday and could inadvertently do their neighbours a favour if they managed to steal points off Mikel Arteta's side, as they currently sit second in the table.
