In the ranks of 'bad things UEFA have done to Ireland', their removal of the 3rd place play-off in 1980 is right up there with giving us about four hours rest between the Italy and French games.
While virtually every other country in Europe will have treated the news of the game's demise with an indifferent shrug, it is a serious blow for the TV viewer in Ireland. For years, RTE have handed the live broadcast of the 3rd place play-off over to comedic geniuses Apres Match, thereby making the most anodyne of games unmissable.
As a result, Apres Match instead took control of RTE's live highlights show last night, and promptly set about nailing it. There were many highlights, but the one which stands out the most are their impressions of TV3 commentating duo Trevor Welch and Keith Andrews. The loss of full rights on RTE has allowed Apres Match a new range of characters on TV3 to parody, and these sketches have seen the lads at their best. Last night's sketch of Welch and Andrews may have been their best yet:
