Construction firm Carillion have issued a statement apologising for the behaviour of one or some of their construction workers, who daubed offensive graffiti relating to the Hillsborough disaster and anti-Liverpool slurs in the toilets of the Main Stand at Anfield.
Building works on Liverpool's new stand are being finished off ahead of the first home game of the season next month, and the Liverpool Echo report that offensive slogans relating to the Hillsborough disaster were found scrawled on the walls, described by the paper as "horrific".
The paper have not published the slogans out of respect to the families of the dead, but they have published the anti-Liverpool slurs, including "“dirty scousers”, “We’ll never die” accompanied by a hint as to the football sympathies of the perpetrators: "MUFC" and "EFC".
A spokesperson for Carillion stated that:
We have spoken to Liverpool Football Club and expressed our disappointment that this has happened.
We would like to apologise to the families and friends of those involved in the terrible events at Hillsborough for any distress caused.
Our people work closely with LFC and the local community and hope this unpleasant incident will not sour the good relationship we have established.
Some supporters have requested Liverpool impose a maximum construction fine on the firm, and donate the money to the Hillsborough families.
