Moments before Italy ended Spanish dreams of winning their third consecutive European Championships, Gianluigi Buffon pulled off a superb, close-range save from Gerard Pique.

Italy counter-attacked immediately with Matteo Darmian setting up Graziano Pelle to make it 2-0 - it was a dagger to the Spanish hopes and a remarkable swing in terms of fortune.

Antonio Conte knew it too. The Italy manager's celebration was unrestrained. Conte - bound for Chelsea after the tournament - jumped on top of the dugout.

After Italy's win against Belgium in their opening game of the tournament, Buffon ran the length of the pitch and leaped to grab the crossbar - he ended up on his arse.

After their last-16 success this evening, his celebration ended without a red face.
