Liverpool are soaring high at the moment, but Darwin Nunez appears to be at crossroads regarding his future at the club.

While Mo Salah is scoring freely next to him, the goals have not came regularly enough for the number nine, and following a bad miss against Aston Villa last week, the fans seemed to have had enough.

Speaking before Liverpool's crucial tie against Man City last Sunday, Newcastle legend Alan Shearer questioned Nunez' commitment to the cause on BBC 5 Live.

"If he was a really good finisher he'd be playing every week.

"The really good goal-scorers don't let the missed chances affect them, in fact, it makes them get better. You've got to keep getting in there. I'm not sure whether it means enough to him.

"I can't say that for certain, but only on the eye and looking at him, that, I don't know."

Missing a big chance against Villa was not the reason that the Dutchman left his striker on the bench, but rather his attitude after he missed, as well his lack of effort against Wolves the week before.

"I helped him by saying you can miss a chance.

"I wasn't only hard on him. But for the second time in a row I wasn't happy with his work effort, against Wolves and against Villa.

"I can't accept if a player doesn't give everything. That is clear. I can accept it once, but twice was a bit too much. That's why I addressed it.

"If you miss a chance, you need to be fighting for the team. I'm not saying he didn't do that at all, but it wasn't the usual Darwin, the one that is loved by the fans.

"That is mainly because he always works so hard."

Liverpool face Newcastle tonight in a crucial game that could see them tighten their grip on the Premier League trophy, and Nunez has had some history with the club before.

The Uruguay International came off the bench last year to score twice against the magpies and seal a 2-1 win for the Reds, and with Shearer's criticism ringing in his ears, he would love to do that again tonight.
