The return of competitive international football dawns for the Republic of Ireland as a trip to Cardiff for the new Nations League approaches. Ahead of that fixture, Wales captain Ashley Williams has said he expects a typical 'physical' challenge from 'British players.'
11 months after Ireland defeated Wales 1-0 in their World Cup qualifier, the sides are set for a re-match. Speaking ahead of Thursday's tie, Williams told the gathered press pack that he knows the challenge Martin O'Neill's side will pose.
They are physical but it’s something we’re used to. Most games in the Premier League or Championship are quite physical. It’s not that different but you know it’ll be physical like it was last time. It’s just another game with British players and we’re used to it.
Last year's tie was a spirited affair that included six yellow cards, five for Ireland and one for Wales. The difference between the sides was a James McClean strike that ensured Wales would not progress to the playoffs.
The starting side that lines out against Ryan Giggs' team will be significantly different from any previous one as James McClean (arm), Robbie Brady (ankle), Alan Browne (calf), Seani Maguire (hamstring), Scott Hogan (groin) and James McCarthy (leg) will all miss the game as well as Harry Arter and Declan Rice.
