Santiago Canizares (Irish hero and inductee into the Gary Mackay Hall of Fame) is the most frequently cited name in the embarrassing sporting injuries.

Like Roy Keane, another veteran of the USA 94 qualifying campaign, Canizares missed the 2002 World Cup in tragic circumstances.

Today, Andy Carroll has surely secured his entry to the comical sporting injuries hall of fame. The Mirror made little effort to spare his blushes with their apposite headline - 'Andy Carroll suffers injury setback - As luckless striker hurts himself putting his shoes on'.

Yes, according to the Mirror, Carroll's return from a previous injury has been prolonged by 7-10 days after he 'rolled his ankle' while engaged in the treacherous activity of putting his shoes on.

The club are unwilling to confirm the exact nature of the injury.
