Ireland defender Andrew Omobamidele looks set to complete a switch from Nottingham Forest to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.

The 22-year-old has been out of favour at the City Ground for some time now and reports from France suggest that a long-awaited switch is imminent.

It is a move that makes perfect sense for the Ireland centre-half, as he seeks to reinvigorate his career.

L'Équipe reported the news on Thursday that Strasbourg are "very close" to finalising the acquisition of Andrew Omobamidele, ending a disappointing year-and-a-half for the youngster at Nottingham Forest.

The report states that the Ligue 1 side have agreed a deal with Forest to take Omobamidele off their hands and that the Irishman has already arrived in the city.

First-team opportunities have been few and far between for Omobamidele at high-flying Forest. The Leixlip native has made just 15 appearances in 17 months with the club, with just one of those coming this season. That one outing - against Newcastle United in the EFL Cup - is his only appearance for the club since April of last year.

Some of that absence has admittedly been down to injury, though Heimir Hallgrímsson's comments ahead of the November camp of internationals suggested that further issues were at play for the 22-year-old.

Omobamidele's lack of game time at club level has further hampered his ability to make an impression on the national team setup - he has made just one appearance under Hallgrímsson thus far. He will hope that the move to Strasbourg will revitalise his chances of lining out for his country.

Strasbourg are managed by former Hull City star and manager Liam Rosenior, who has been in charge of the club since last summer. The French side have been in Ligue 1 since earning promotion in 2017, and currently sit in 10th place, just outside the top half.

Omobamidele can also hope for somewhat more regular game time at the club, with the same L'Équipe report suggesting that experienced defender Abakar Sylla is set to leave Strasbourg.

Irish fans will be familiar with Ligue 1 from Jake O'Brien's stint there with Lyon and will hope that it can have a similar effect on the career of Andrew Omobamidele.
