Manchester United ended their season with a 2-0 defeat to Cardiff in Old Trafford in what was a disappointing end to a dire season for several players, including Alexis Sanchez.
One of their many under-performers was former Arsenal striker Sanchez. Signed in January 2018 by Jose Mourinho, Sanchez has endured an inconsistent spell with the club and has found himself well down the pecking order in recent weeks.
The Chilean penned a lengthy message for fans after Sunday's game, apologising for recent events.
Personally, I didn’t perform as much as I was expecting because of unpredictable injuries. Press and people were speculating of things that were not even true. I was always a professional in all aspects.
I apologise to the fans for not be able to achieve our goals...
He went on to promise "Manchester United one day will return".
Alexis Sanchez's arrival had a remarkable impact on the club's dressing room. It reportedly prompted David De Gea to demand an increase in salary which has yet to be resolved, while Ander Herrera also responded by seeking an increased salary which was not met. It has since been confirmed he will leave the club this summer.
For Sanchez and the club, a welcomed break looms but there is an uncertain future ahead.
