You know when you stroll around Aldi and casually pick up a bottle of wine and throw it in the trolley? Just in case there's an emergency, a sauce emergency, at some stage over the weekend. Well, Alex Ferguson has that habit too, except times a thousand.

He amassed a collection of 5,000 bottles of wine during his time as Man Utd manager and now sees it as the right time to auction it all off.

The sale will start in Hong Kong in May where 60% will be sold by Christie's Auction House, further lots will be sold in London and on the internet. He probably didn't pick any of that wine up in a discount German supermarket on Parnell Street though as the entire collection is expected to fetch around £3 million.

75% of the wine is Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, which according to Christie's International Director of Wine David Elswood is "in vogue" right now. I'm sure you already knew that though.

According to the Daily Mail today, the Scot earns £2 million a year from 20 days of ambassadorial work for Man Utd and £100,000 a go for speaking engagements.
