Ever since Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, the club have struggled to escape from beneath his shadow.

One of the most successful managers of all-time, anyone who subsequently coaches the club will inevitably be compared to the Scot. Of course, such comparisons are unlikely to reflect well on the current boss.

Despite stepping away from the role almost a decade a go, Ferguson remains a prominent figure at the club. He is a regular attendee at matches at Old Trafford, usually seen when the camera pans to him after yet another poor performance from his old team.

The 80-year is actually still an employee at the club, acting as an ambassador. As it turns out, that has been quite a lucrative position for him since his retirement.

Alex Ferguson still drawing massive Manchester United salary

The Sun are reporting that Alex Ferguson is paid £2million per year by Manchester United to be a club ambassador, a role which features around ten days of work per year.

This is only one part of a massive income stream in his post-management years, with Ferguson thought to have earned over £12million in 2021 from his various investments, book deals, and public appearances.

However, it is the salary he draws from United that is sure to raise the most eyebrows.

Paying a former manager such an amount is certainly an irregular move, even for someone of Ferguson's stature. Some will say this also points towards their failure to move on from that era, with the club having spent almost a decade attempting to recreate his tenure at Old Trafford.

United are set to appoint their fifth permanent manager in the post-Ferguson era in the weeks ahead, with reports suggesting they are close to agreeing a deal to appoint Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.
