International football is OVER (for a month) so it is time to return to the pseudosoap of professional club football. Bayern Munich once again find themselves tormented by mediocrity and underperformance at the beginning of a season, which is probably mainly down to their failure to regenerate their squad and the fact they are still reliant on Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben.
Having sacked Carlo Ancelotti last year and broken the Jupp Heckneyes- shaped glass, they appointed Niko Kovac from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Kovac, however, has struggled, and Bayern are sixth in the Bundesliga, four points off Dortmund at the top. While they have four points from two games in the Champions League, they were blessed to avoid defeat at home to Ajax on Matchday Two.
Bayern are calling a press conference today per Bild, with Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge due to be in attendance. The last time they called one of these during the season was to fire Ancelotti and announce (yet another) return for Heckneyes.
We aren't so sure they are going to fire Kovac just yet - why didn't they do it earlier in the international break, if that's the plan? - but if they do, one man is going to be heavily linked with the vacant role in Bavaria: Arsene Wenger.
Wenger has said that he is eager to return to work, and while there have been mumblings about his prospects as a Sporting Director at PSG, he has also been linked with the jobs at Bayern and Real Madrid. Wenger has a decent relationship with the bosses at PSG (he has done a bit of punditry for BeIn Sports, for example) but we can't imagine that the role would suit him. He never seemed keen to work with a Sporting Director at Arsenal, so imagine how difficult it would be for Thomas Tuchel to work with Wenger in that role?
Elsewhere, Wenger's legacy at Arsenal of signing bad defenders may yet live on.
Footballspeak today says that Liverpool are 'resigned' to losing Alberto Moreno on a free transfer next summer, although perhaps the more accurate translation of that verb is 'relieved'. The Spaniard is out of contract at the end of the season and Unai Emery, who worked with Moreno at Sevilla, is thought to be keen to work with him again.
Liverpool are reportedly keen to replace him with Leicester's Ben Chilwell.
