Alan Shearer has taken his fair share of flack from Gary Lineker over the years on Match of the Day.

One of Lineker's running gags on the show is to reference Shearer's failure to win the FA Cup during his playing career, usually at the start of a cup broadcast on BBC.

As well as that, Shearer has also been on the receiving end of witty jabs during Lineker's show openers week-in-week-out over the past few years.

On Friday night, Shearer got one back on Lineker, throwing a cheeky dig at his compatriot while they discussed the legacy of Dutch icon Johan Cruyff.

Alan Shearer had unexpected dig at Gary Lineker during Johan Cruyff discussion

With the Netherlands taking on France in Germany on Friday night, it seemed only appropriate that the BBC team paid tribute to one of Dutch football's most iconic moments.

The 50th anniversary of the iconic 'Cruyff turn' passed on Wednesday, and the BBC panel of Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Cesc Fabregas and Gary Lineker paid tribute to the legendary Dutchman ahead of kick-off on Friday.

Cruyff would go on to be a successful manager after his retirement from playing, most famously revitalising Barcelona in the late '80s and early '90s, bringing their first European Cup triumph at Wembley in 1992.

Gary Lineker spent a season playing under Cruyff in Catalonia in 1988-89, though things would turn sour with the Englishman finding himself deployed on the wing regularly and falling out of favour with the Dutchman.

While the BBC panel fawned over the iconic 'Cruyff turn' on Friday evening, Alan Shearer took the opportunity to throw a brilliant jab at the host.

Lineker: It's fifty years to the day since we saw the Cruyff turn.

Shearer: Fifty years...

Lineker: Fifty years, I know. I remember it as well! 1974, here in Germany. He goes, 'Woah, see ya!'

Shearer: Brilliant, isn't it? He turned you as well though didn't he? He turned you into a winger and he turned you into a substitute.

Lineker laughed off Shearer's joke before jokingly turning away from the panel and quietly murmuring, 'Cheers Al...'

Earlier this week, Lineker himself caught out one of the BBC pundits with a joke of his own.

The ex-England striker had Frank Lampard flabbergasted after making a joke about the 45-year-old's thinning hair. Lineker later apologised for the remark in a hilarious podcast appearance with Micah Richards.
