Shane Long started up front for Southampton on Wednesday night at they beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in the League Cup.
33 minutes into the game, Southampton took the lead when Shane Long was brought down in the box by Martin Kelly and Charlie Austin converted the penalty.
Post-match, Palace manager Alan Pardew accused Shane Long of diving and having a 'history' of going down easily in the penalty area.
Shane Long is quick and has got a bit of history in those situations.
He was definitely going over, I know that, but the video I saw was inconclusive. The players felt it was a bit harsh but it was difficult to see unless you see it clearly on television.
Replays show that it was undoubtedly a penalty. Martin Kelly miscontrolled the ball on his chest allowing Long to pounce. Attempting to amend his mistake, Kelly lunged in and took out Long's left leg.
The Southern Daily Echo say that Southampton manager Claude Puel was initially reluctant to answer questions about the incident but at the third time of asking defended Long.
It was dangerous the tackle of the defender on Shane.
I am afraid that he was injured, that he take a yellow card.
I think it’s important for the yellow card for this dangerous tackle from behind.
I didn’t know if the second half he can play because he takes an important tackle. Dangerous.
Long has been playing well for Southampton but in seven appearances, four of them starts, he is yet to score this season.
