The ignomy of scoring an own goal in football is one of the worst feelings a player will go through. That feeling of shame is compounded when said gaffe is an unintentional worldie.
Here are ten of the most aesthetically pleasing own goals.
10. Daniele De Rossi V Barcelona
Before Roma's miraculous comeback in Rome, they left it with all to do at the Nou Camp as De Rossi tackled the ball home from long range.
9. Djimi Traore V Burley
Traore's inadvertent Marseille roulette was more than likely the inspiration for this terrific Liverpool chant:
Don't blame it on the Biscan,
Don't blame it on the Hamann,
Don't blame it on the Finnan,
Blame it on Traore,
He just can't, He just can't, He just can't control his feet.
8. Geoffrey Kongdogbia V Chelsea
There have been many back passes that have gone awry over the years, but none more accurate than current Valencia midfielder Geoffrey Kongdogbia who stroked an effort just under the cross bar when Inter Milan and Chelsea played a friendly in 2017.
7. Zarko Udovivic V Stal Mielec
The angle is so, so tight for Udovivic but the defender still manages to find the back of the net. A great advert for the Polish second tier.
6. Jamie Pollock V QPR
Shades of Gazza versus Scotland, Pollock shows great skill to flick the ball up in the air and a stunning lack of awareness of his goalkeepers' position as he heads the ball into net.
5. Milan Gajic V St. Gallen
The great thing about own goals is that because they are usually meant to be clearances, they are struck with great power. This proves to be Milan Gajic's downfall as he smacks the ball home from the edge of the box.
4. Tony Popovic V Portsmouth
Before Mkyitaryan there was Popovic. This scorpion flick is absolute precision.
3. Festus Baisem V Sun Hei SC
Before Olivier Giroud there was Festus Baise who has managed to top Popovic's effort for audacity and accuracy.
2. Adrien Gulfo V FC Renens
Defenders clearing the ball with overhead kicks is a rare occurrence. So the odds of Adrien Gulfo's effort nestling in the back of the net from that position had to be very small but the defender somehow manages to skew the ball into the bottom corner with a scarcely believable OG.
1. Inigo Martinez V England
Take a bow son. All of 30 yards out, a sumptuous connection with his heel saw the ball sail over his 'keeper's head to go down as one of the most aesthetically beautiful own goals of all time.
