In a bizarre series of events yesterday, Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman was booked for performing his signature celebration after scoring in a 2-2 draw with Udinese. Lookman was baffled by the referee's decision, and quite frankly you can't blame him.

The winger, who has moved to the Italian side following recent loan spells at Fulham and Leicester, has scored three goals from nine appearances this season as Atalanta, currently unbeaten so far, sit second in Serie A.

Lookman booked for his signature celebration

Scoring to break the deadlock in the 35th minute, Lookman struck from close range following an effective counter attack to add to his goal tally and give Atalanta the lead. What followed seemed pretty normal, as the Nigerian international ran to the corner to celebrate with his teammates.

On his way back to the half-way line, Lookman turned to the cameras and performed his signature glasses celebration. The referee then showed the Atalanta winger a yellow card for this act, much to his confusion. Lookman was baffled and tried to explain the celebration to the referee, but was removed from the situation by his teammates, who feared further punishment for descent.

Lookman can be seen saying to the referee:

What!? That is my celebration

Reaction to Lookman's booking

Fans and neutrals have taken to Twitter to discuss this bizarre situation. The celebration is in reference to his name, Lookman, as he imitates a pair of binoculars. The celebration is widely known, and for the referee to issue a yellow card is truly baffling.

A shocking refereeing decision has left fans angry, and rightly so, the celebration does not breach any celebratory rules and saw the winger cautioned for no valid reason.

Atalanta will no doubt be looking for clarification and a statement from the Italian Referee's Association. If a player is booked 5 times, they will miss a game. With Lookman in a great run of form, scoring goals in back to back matches, Atalanta would be furious if they lost him to suspension after receiving an unwarranted yellow card.
