Anyone remember Aaron Simpson? You know, the former Waterford and League of Ireland player? Maybe not.
But you may know him as the professional footballer unveiled last night on Love Island, and yes, he did play in the League of Ireland for Waterford back in 2019.
Last night, Simpson became the latest to join the reality TV show as he puts his football career on hold for the time being.
The 24-year-old defender joined Waterford in 2019 on a deal until the end of the end of the season under then boss Alan Reynolds.
Prior to joining the Blues, Simpson was formerly of Wolves, Portsmouth and Kilmarnock before making his move to the RSC.
Since leaving the RSC and Waterford, the defender went on to play non-league football in the UK.
Stints at Dover Athletic and Sutton United followed since his relatively brief stint in the League of Ireland.
Aaron Simpson before his Love Island days
He joined Waterford in March 2019 on a deal that was meant to last until the end of the season.
Prior to putting pen to paper on his contract with the club, he trained with them for a two-week spell.
“I was a bit sceptical coming over, of course," he said after signing for Waterford in 2019.
I’d never even been in Ireland, but once I got here and saw the professionalism of how things are run, the lads and the staff were great.
I got a good vibe from it here and that’s why I wanted to stay.
Coming to Ireland, I wasn’t really too sure about what the standard would be and that. But we’ve got great players here, a really good mixture with some really experienced guys and a lot of good young players too.
I can’t wait to learn from the likes of Damien [Delaney] and I think we can do really well this season.
And his sentiments were shared by his manager at the time.
“We’re really happy to get Aaron in and sorted," Reynolds said.
"He’s been in around the squad for the last few weeks, working on his fitness with Joe and being in around the lads too and he’s done well."
Unfortunately for Simpson, his time in the South-East was cut short. Just three months after signing he left, making nine appearances, leaving the club alongside Scott Twine And Hugo Keto.
And yes, we are just as surprised by it all as you are.
