It's been a difficult last couple of seasons for Aaron Connolly. After bursting onto the scene during the 2019/20 Premier League season with a brace against Spurs, the Ireland international has struggled for form and game time.
Mick McCarthy called Connolly up to the Ireland senior side after his performance against then Champions League runners up and he made his debut in the 0-0 draw against Georgia.
The Galway native has scored eight goals in 50 appearances for Brighton, but was been shipped out on loan to Middlesbrough in January for the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign. Connolly didn't make a single start for the Seagulls in the Premier League last year and failed to set the world alight during his short spell at Middlesbrough.
Aaron Connolly and Venezia FC
The Brighton Argus are reporting that Italian outfit Venezia are interested in signing the attacker. Venezia were relegated from Serie A last season.
Connolly is currently in Italy undergoing talks with the Serie B outfit ahead of a permanent move. He posted a photo to his instagram story this afternoon that was undeniably Venice.
Italian sides have captured the signatures of quite a few Irish players over the past year with James Abankwah and Festy Ebosele joining Udinese, Cathal Heffernan signing for AC Milan and Kevin Zefi playing with their rivals Inter.
Most recently, UCD sold winger Liam Kerrigan to Serie B side Como and Connolly could become the sixth Irish player to go to Italy in the past year.
Venezia are a favourite side of football hipster due to their beautiful Kappa kits.
Perhaps a move away from English football could be good for Aaron Connolly who needs to show that he can reach the potential that he showed so early on.
Connolly has also struggled with the media in recent years, deleting his Twitter at the start of 2021 due to a barrage of abusive comments. A move away from the spotlight that English football puts on players, could be essential to his growth as a player.
