A group of Irish fans went to incredible lengths to make sure they could attend Ireland's 3-0 defeat to Belgium, and trust us, this isn't another one of 'those' stories about a bunch of Tayto-licking eejits sneaking into a stadium.
Jack O'Dea sent a screenshot to our Euros Facebook group of an article from today's Irish Independent - to our knowledge exclusive to the print copy - which details how a number of the travelling Irish contingent overcame a ticket mix-up to take their place in the Nouveaux Stade for Ireland's second group game.
The article reads:
A group of Irish fans rented a wheelchair to get into the match in Bordeaux. At least two fans got tickets for the game against Belgium, but didn't realist they were in the disabled section until they collected them. A source said: "They were desperate to go so they rented a wheelchair and one fan pushed the second guy in. They covered the 'disabled' guy's legs with a tricolour."
Hashtag sources, but an extraordinary yarn nonetheless. And while the outrage junkies amongst us might attempt to point out that what these chancers did was 'disrespectful' or 'in bad taste', it's worth pointing out that UEFA actually began offering tickets for the disabled sections to non-disabled fans on Portal due to lack of sales.
And so, in essence, the clearly unknowing lads should have been absolutely grand without using a wheelchair, but you simply can't question their commitment to the boys in green.
Michael Burke commented in the Balls.ie Euro 2016 Facebook Group:
Well, like the disabled toilets, it's absolutely fine to do it or use it as long as you're not obstructing a disabled person from it.
At least the bloke in the wheelchair didn't have cause to lose the run of himself celebrating. The 'miracle of Bordeaux' memes would have been too much.
