Adam Rooney has been quietly putting in a solid season for Aberdeen in the SPL.
The Dubliner has 20 goals in 30 games, contributing to a run of 26 points from 30 for The Dons. His latest was a screamer to earn his team a draw against St.Johnstone.
Speaking to The Press and Journal, Rooney, who has nine Ireland U21 caps, expressed his desire to play for Ireland at senior level.
I need to do as well as I can. As an attacker it’s all about scoring goals or if I’m wide it’s about setting them up. If it gets me recognised at international level that is a nice bonus.
But it depends on what the manager thinks. Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane have come in and they will have their own ideas on players and it’s up to them.
With Rooney the driving force behind Aberdeen's title charge this season, they are just three points behind Celtic, there is hope for him yet, especially given the dearth of options up front for Ireland.
Fellow SPL player Anthony Stokes has managed just eight goals this seasons and regularly finds himself in the Ireland squad so the possibility may not be as remote as it seems.
