Cork City FC have announced the return of Alan Bennett to the club. The 33-year-old played for the Leesiders from 2000-06 before moving to England where he was employed by Reading, Southampton, Brentford and most recently AFC Wimbledon.
He is the second Irish international to return to the club, with Liam Miller also joining the club last month. Bennett won his two caps in 2007 on Ireland's USA tour. Speaking to the clubs website, Bennett sounded enthusiastic about his move.
I’m excited and I am looking forward to it. When the opportunity came around, it was a very easy decision. It was something I have always wanted to do and always said I would do, and now that it is happening, I am looking forward to it.
I’m looking forward to meeting some of the new players and also meeting up with players I have played with previously. We are all Cork lads and we all want to play for a Cork team that is doing well; it is something that excites me and gets me going again, and I can’t wait to get started.
Cork City have built their squad steadily ahead of the new campaign and will be quietly confident of winning the title after coming so close last season.
They are currently fourth favourites at 4/1 with Dundalk, Pat's and Shamrock Rovers all at 5/2. With the best attendances in the league and the club amongst the most well run in the league, football in Cork appears to have a bright future.
