When Scott Laird scored the opening goal of Preston North End's FA Cup fifth round tie with Manchester United, FA Cup romanticisers were fawning over the prospect of another major upset as the League One side looked on course to dump Louis Van Gaal's men out of the competition.

Unfortunately for Preston, and for ABUs everywhere, Manchester United went on to come-back and win 3-1, thanks to goals from Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini, and Wayne Rooney.

But a fantastic story has emerged from the match, as the Preston goalscorer has revealed he received a goal bonus of £1, from his lovely grandmother, as part of a bet that has been running since Laird and his brother were kids.

Speaking to the BBC, the Scottish left-back said:

Every time we scored as kids, she used to give me and my brothers a pound. Even though I'm 26 now, I still carry that tradition on.

Laird then explained that he tried to squeeze some more money out of the bet due to the magnitude of his opponents, but his Granny stood firm.

She was the first person I rang last night and I said 'I want that pound', I tried saying I wanted a bit more because it was against Manchester United, but she says that wasn't in the contract. It's something I'll be going on with until the end of my career.

Fair play to her, we imagine Scottish grannies are a lot like Irish grannies in their firm stance on contractual obligations.
