Regardless of what league you're playing in, if you're a professional footballer scoring 18 league goals before the turn of the year, you're more than likely going to be getting offers to move up the ladder. As such, it's no surprise that Eoin Doyle may be about to make the move up to the Championship very soon indeed.
The former Sligo and Shamrock Rovers striker is lighting up League 1 with Chesterfield to such an extent that he is currently the top scorer in all four divisions of the English league pyramid. Doyle's ability to find the net under his former Sligo boss Paul Cook has been the main reason why Chesterfield are sitting comfortably just outside the play-off spots despite only gaining promotion in May.
18 league goals and an ability to score from all manner of situations have seen Doyle jump to the top of quite a few shopping lists and although Cook would be loath to lose his talisman, it's looking increasingly likely that Doyle may be the subject of some hefty transfer bids in the coming month.
Just this weekend, Sheffield Wednesday boss Stuart Gray admitted that Doyle was on his 'radar' according to the Sheffield Star.
He’s scoring goals on a regular basis. Those type of players are always going to be on the radar. You are always looking at every division. I won’t comment on speculation but we are going to be interested in anyone who is scoring goals.
In other words he's begging his chairman to loosen the strings to allow him to bring Doyle in to supplement the paltry 17 league goals that his side have scored this year.
It's unlikely that Doyle will come cheap particularly considering the fact that Wednesday are unlikely to be the only club interested. Millwall and fellow League 1 high fliers Bristol City have also been credited with an interest in Doyle whose value is said to be in excess of the £1 million mark. One way or another, if Doyle keeps up his scoring rate, he could become an interesting proposition for Martin O'Neill sooner rather than later.
