In a match that passed unnoticed by all in this part of the world except for the most degenerate of gamblers, Tran Dinh Dong, a centre back for the Vietnamese national team, has been given a massive 28-game ban for a lunge in a domestic league match which broke the leg of opponent Nguyen Ahn Hung.

Song Lam Nghe An, Tran's club, are unsurprisingly planning to appeal the ban. Head coach Nguyen Huu Thang told local media: “I will fine him if he does wrong. I think the VFF (Vietnam Football Federation) issued the fine under pressure from public opinion, not based on reality."

The VFF countered with a statement that read: “The punishment is meant to be a warning to players throughout the nation, where violent behaviour on the field has gradually become more popular."

Tran has also been ordered to cover Nguyen's medical bills amounting to 20 million Vietnamese Dong (€680). Nguyen is expected to be sidelined for roughly one year. Tran will also be out until 2015 if the suspension is upheld.

And yeah, it's fairly graphic
