Chelsea finished level on points with Shakhtar Donetsk in Group E of the Champions League and they had a superior goal difference. UEFA however, was using the head-to-head results between teams as the tiebreaker. Chelsea had beaten Shakhtar 3-2 at home but had lost the away tie 2-1 so because Shakhtar had scored more away goals in those games, it meant they went through.
