Man United are to undergo some major surgery in the summer, as manager Louis van Gaal prepares to overhaul his playing squad. The first signing for van Gaal could be a young Englishman who has been impressing in the Premier League this season.

With the futures of Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie, and Javier Hernandez uncertain, van Gaal looks set to make a big push for 22 year old English forward Danny Ings. The Burnley striker is out of contract at the end of this season, and 'highly placed sources in Old Trafford' have confirmed their interest in Ings according to the Daily Mail.

The rules in England state that while Ings may be out of contract, Burnley will be entitled to compensation of up to £5 million were he to move to another English club. It is rumoured that Man United have already held talks with Burnely through a loophole in the Premier League regulations in an attempt to agree a fee to secure the transfer in the summer.

Ings would count as one of the English raised players in Man United's squad, which may be close to losing a few others. Each Premier League club needs to have at least eight players who spent at least three years in England before the age of 21.

Manchester United are not the only club interested in Ings, who has become hot property after a stellar season for Burnley. Ings has scored nine goals in 29 games for the relegation threatened team, just one season after scoring 20 goals in 40 games in the Championship. Liverpool are heavily interested as well, while there are reports that Real Sociedad, Tottenham and Man City are also monitoring the situation.

Other targets for van Gaal are thought to include Dortmund's Mats Hummels, PSV's Memphis Depay, and Southampton right back Nathaniel Clyne.
