Football was a different game back then.
The 1974 Charity Shield was contested between Brian Clough's Leeds United and Bob Paisley's Liverpool, and neither team was particularly fond of each other. The previous year saw Leeds claim the league title, while Liverpool took the FA Cup, so the Charity Shield was always bound to be a feisty affair. And so it was.
With Liverpool leading 1-0, Giles took exception to a hard shove in the back from Kevin Keegan, and in one swooping motion turned and knocked the Liverpool star on his arse with a punch.
The referee who was standing merely yards away decided, with the help of an appeal from Keegan, that a booking was fair punishment.
Keegan would later be sent of for a brief boxing match with Leeds' Billy Bremner, who also saw red. The match finished 1-1, but Liverpool would end up victorious after a penalty shoot-out. Giles, of course, buried his pen.
