Wes Brown was sent off during Man Utd's 2-0 win over Sunderland today but it appeared that it should have been John O'Shea to see red. The Waterford man pulled down Radamel Falcao in the box conceding a penalty which Wayne Rooney converted. Wes Brown made contact with the Colombian also but it was well after the initial foul by O'Shea.

Referee's body PGMOL has since released a statement regarding the incident, saying that from referee Roger East's position he saw contact from both of the Sunderland defenders.

From his position Roger Easy, the match referee, believed he saw contact from John O'Shea and Wes Brown on Radamel Falcao.

As he thought Brown made a foul on Falcao while he was in the act of shooting, he dismissed Brown.

After the incident the match referee consulted with his team of officials but none were better placed to offer guidance.

Many, like Paul Merson and Jeff Stelling above, thought that this was a Gibbs and Oxlade-Chamberlain-esque moment of mistaken identity but it seems they were incorrect.
