Former Ballon D'Or winner and Italian World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro has been handed a 10 month prison sentence after breaking a police seal and trespassing on his own property.

Cannavaro's villa in Naples had been seized by Italian authorities as part of an investigation into suspected abuse of building regulations, as the ex-Italy international is believed to have carried out building on the house, garden, and pool of his property without planning permission from the local council.

Also handed custodial sentences were his brother Paolo Cannavaro, and Paolo's girlfriend Daniela Arenoso, who joined Fabio for a dip in the pool despite the house being sealed-off by police. Yes, you read that right, Fabio Cannavaro may be going to prison because he went for a swim in his villa when he wasn't allowed to.

The sentence is currently suspended while the case is being re-investigated due to an immediate appeal by all parties involved, but were Cannavaro to see jail time, surely it will be one of the stupidest reasons for a sports star going to jail in history. And what will become of Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande, who Cannavaro is currently manager of? Has nobody stopped to think of them in this great big mess?
