Lamar Neagle. One of the more uniquely Irish names around. In that it could be unique in the Irish football team.
Lamar Neagle Ireland
The Seattle Sounders player has revealed that Martin O'Neill and his scouts from the FAI have approached him about his eligibility for Ireland. The 27 year old winger has improved gradually for the Sounders in the last few years, culminating in his best season so far for the Washington state based franchise with nine goals and nine assists as Seattle were beaten by Robbie Keane's LA Galaxy in the MLS Cup final.
Martin O'Neill is doing what Jack Charlton did by working the "Granny Rule" to Ireland's advantage and strengthening the national team's playing pool. This coincided with Ireland's best period in the late 80's and early 90's, and O'Neill is looking to return to those heady days. Already, English born Cyrus Christie, David McGoldrick and Rob Elliot have made their debuts, while Neagle and Colorado Rapids youngster Shane O'Neill might be joining them.
Neagle however is the type of winger that O'Neill likes - a powerful player, whose motor can get him up and down the flanks all while chipping in with a few goals and assists. Neagle already holds an Irish passport, qualifying through his maternal grandmother.
While he has suggested that he could be open to playing for Ireland, he has been involved in United States squads, but has remained on the bench in friendlies.
