By the time this season's Champions League final rolls around, it will have been four years since a Premier League team played in the competition decider - that was Chelsea's win against Bayern Munich in 2012.
Since then, just one team from English football's top flight has played in a semi-final of the tournament, that was also Chelsea.
The struggles of English clubs in Europe and the English national team when it comes to international tournaments has led FA chairman Greg Dyke to believe change is needed.
According to Henry Winter of The Times, Dyke will ask Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore to consider reducing the number of teams in the league to 18. He also proposes that the league move to two teams being relegated to the Championship and two promoted from the second tier.
Dyke believes the decreased fixture congestion would help Premier League teams be more competitive in Europe and also mean English players would be fresher come World Cups and European Championships.
The most recent structural change to the league was in 1995 when it was reduced from 22 teams to 20.
