Wigan owner Dave Whelan has apologised for anti-Semitic language attributed to him in an interview with The Guardian. The 77-year-old reportedly told David Conn:
Jewish people chase money more than everybody else.
Whelan made the comments during an interview explaining the controversial appointment of Malky Mackay who is currently under investigation by the Football Association of alleged racist text messages and emails sent while manager of Cardiff City.
Talking to Sky, Whelan apologised saying:
I would never, ever insult a Jewish person. I've got hundreds and hundreds of Jewish friends. I would never, ever upset any Jewish person because I hold them in the highest regard. If anybody take offence to anything I've said, please accept my sincere apology. It's either a misquote or on that day I must have done 50 interviews. You can imagine how many times I've been on radio, television, et cetera because of this case. I did not mean to insult any single person, so please accept my sincere apology if they feel that way. It was not intended.
