15 Years On, Remembering The Manchester United Treble-Clinching Win

It might not seem like that long ago but today marks the 15th anniversary of the 1999 Champions League final, where Manchester United defeated Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou in Barcelona, thus clinching the third trophy of an historic Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League treble.

This night would prove to be a major night in the history of Manchester United, but it didn't start well at all. It took just 6 minutes for the Germans to take the lead and cast a shadow of doubt over the treble dreams that United fans had dared not to think about until that night. Mario Basler was the man who got the early goal as he deceived the great Peter Schmeichel from a free-kick just outside the box.

Although Bayern were denied twice by the woodwork (including an overhead kick from Carsten Jancker) the score remained 1-0 until the very death, when Stefan Effenberg put the ball behind for a corner at 91 minutes played. Beckham delivered, United were level.

United were buzzing, and when Solskjaer won another corner in the 93rd minute, it seemed like fate. Beckham again, Sheringham with the flick on, and the ball fell to super-sub Solskjaer who with one swipe of his boot won the match, and the Champions League, which capped an amazing season for Sir Alex Ferguson's men.

Clive Tyldesley was on commentary duty for ITV in Barcelona that night, and his description of Solskjaer's winner ("Beckham... Into Sheringham... AND SOLSKJAER HAS WON IT!") has gone down as one of the most iconic moments of sports commentary. German TV had a very different feel to it. Where Tyldesley could barely contain his excitement, the German commentator seemed gutted to see Bayern throw the game away. He also had a few funny lines on referee Pierluigi Collina.

This footage of the final 3 minutes has since surfaced, which gives an excellent insight to the emotion of the players as the game is turned on it's head. The despair of the Bayern players in particular makes this video a must watch if you managed to miss it.

And finally, some behind the scenes footage of the celebrations, featuring Dennis "Any Beers?" Irwin and a mischievous Roy Keane
