Michael van Gerwen has reached the final four of the World Darts Championship after an epic against Callan Rydz but old foe Peter Wright will not be there to join him.
MvG averaged in excess of 103 on New Years Day as he ousted Englishman Rydz 5-3 with the pair producing 31 180s between them.
Van Gerwen, who won his third world title back at the 2019 event, averaged over 100 for the second game on the spin, having beaten Jeffrey De Graaf in the last 16 with an average of 102.
Wright. who was eliminated by Stephen Bunting, had reverted to his trademark mindgames in predicting that defending champion Luke Humphries - who he has since eliminated - would be knocked out of the tournament.
He then predicted that Rydz would get the better of Van Gerwen in the quarter-finals, something which drew a response from the Dutchman after his win over De Graaf.
Peter Wright, yeah. He’s always allowed to talk c**p," he said in his press conference.
"No one takes him seriously on the tour as well because he’s not allowed an opinion at home as well, do you know what I mean?"
The dig at Wright and his wife and manager Jo, who travels with her husband on tour and has been a familiar face in the sport for years, was reportedly not well received.
Dutch darts player Vincent van der Voort- who is a close friend of Van Gerwen - added further context on the the Darts Draait Door podcast.
'I don't think Mrs. Wright is too happy with those statements from Michael and neither is Peter himself.
"But it does often come across that way in their relationship that he has nothing to say at home. I do know that he still gets pocket money.
"Well, if that's the case, you're not the boss at home. I can tell you that. So I guess it's true."
Van Gerwen doubles down on dig at Peter Wright's wife
Van Gerwen was in good spirits after his victory against Rydz, who missed key darts at double in their thrilling afternoon clash.
Van der Voorts claim that the Wrights were unhappy was put to him in his post-match press conference, and he doubled down on what he had said with a smile.
'Was she (unhappy)?," he asked.
"I don't know. She is never happy with me anyway."
No love lost by the sounds of it.
Van Gerwen will take on Chris Dobey in the semis after he beat Gerwyn Price, while Bunting takes on the winner of Luke Littler vs Nathan Aspinall.
