Noa-Lynn van Leuven has made history by becoming the first transgender player to play a match at the PDC World Darts Championship.

The competition has seen some ground-breaking moments in the last few years, including Fallon Sherrock's history-making victory against Ted Evetts in 2020.

Sherrock, who became the first woman to ever win a match on the famous Alexandra Palace stage, followed up that win with a brilliant victory against Mensur Suljovic.

The competition has also seen electrician-turned-professional player Rob Cross win the title on debut in 2018, while teenage sensation Luke Littler put in a record-breaking run to the final 12 months ago.

Van Leuven, who made her major PDC debut at the Grand Slam of Darts in November, qualified via one of two women's places alongside Sherrock.

She met compatriot Kevin Doets of the Netherlands in round one on Tuesday afternoon and started strongly, winning the opening set 3-0.

She followed up her first set win with a 120 checkout, but a series of missed doubles in one leg derailed her game and Doets took advantage after winning it in 33 darts.

Doets quickly racked up two sets, turning the match on its head and completed a professional 3-1 win to set up a second round rematch with Michael Smith.

Van Leuven gave a good account of herself, and would've had an average in the 90s had it not been for that disastrous leg midway through the contest.

She hit six 180s despite her defeat, also pinning two ton-plus finishes with the game in the balance.

The crowd reception for Van Leuven was always going to be a subject of debate, considering the frosty reception she received at the Grand Slam in Wolverhampton.

However, she was impressed with the response the crowd gave her at Alexandra Palace as she played out an entertaining encounter with Doets.

If we look back at the Grand Slam, I guess in my first game there was only a bit of booing," she reflected.

"I didn't expect the crowd to be really terrible and hoped they were with me.

"I guess they were with me, and they just wanted to see good darts and both myself and Kevin showed some good darts."

The defeat means that gaining a PDC Tour Card via Q-School is next on Van Leuven's agenda.

Doets, meanwhile, will play 2023 winner Smith as he looks to avenge his defeat to the two-time major winner from 12 months ago.
