Nicolas Roche has taken over the overall leader's red jersey at the Vuelta a España today. The Irishman finished third in today's stage, from Jerez de la Frontera and Estepona in Andalusia to head the general classification.

The Team Saxo-Tinkoff rider didn't even come into the Vuelta as team leaser but after the eight stage now holds a 17 second lead over second place Chris Horner.
Roche is the first Irishman to lead a Grand Tour since Sean Kelly.
