It must be bloody difficult to be a cyclist these days. There's no way it is the only sport that has been tarnished by doping but it is certainly the one that has taken the biggest hit for it. Cyclists that you have to assume are clean are either too average for most people to care or good enough that they can't escape the constant cloud of suspicion.
Among the latter group is Mark Cavendish. The Isle of Man man is not known to be the most amenable chap at the best of times but during the press conference for the Tour Down Under yesterday, he was asked a question about doping that he didn't take too kindly to and firmly let the journalist in question know just how he felt about it.
According to Cycling Quotes the press conference was going along in a very friendly manner when Cavendish was asked whether he was 100 percent sure if everyone in the peloton was clean, to which the mood of the room changed and Cavendish hit back thusly;
Can you tell me 100 percent that one of these journalists isn’t fucking your wife?
He further went on to explain his comment.
Where there’s money to be gained, there’ll be the odd dickhead who cheats but cycling is miles ahead of other sports when it comes to testing. I hope everyone’s correct but with human nature, you can never be certain. But the positive that I can take is that if someone is cheating, he will be caught.
