This is Bennett's first appearance at the Spanish event, although he has had success in the cycling Grand Tours before, having won three stages at last year's Giro d'Italia.
It was also good news for Nicolas Roche, who managed to retain his red jersey with a two second lead over the field.
Speaking to Eurosport after his win, Bennett gave all the credit for the victory to his team mates.

I can't tell you how relieved I am with that. I kind of felt so bad yesterday, I can't you how bad my legs were in that stage, whether I went easy or hard they felt bad.
Thanks to the team I could relax and just follow them, really trust them. They got me in the right place at the right time to make my effort, if it wasn't for the team today I wouldn't have got it.
