Ireland's Dan Martin wins Liege Bastogne Liege to confirm his place among the world's leading cyclists. Martin's team mate Ryder Hesjedel set the pace for the leading pack for the final few kilometres and Martin was easily able to respond to an attack by the Spanish classic specialist Joaquin Rodriguez. The win for Martin propels him to third place in the UCI World Rankings for 2013. Martin also won the Volta a Catalunya less than a month ago. He becomes the second Irish man to win the race following Sean Kelly in 1984 & 1989. The last cycling "Monument" to be won by an Irish rider was the 1992 Milan-san Remo classic, also won by Kelly.
It has been some year for Irish cycing so far this year with Martin's superb wins adding to Martyn Irvine's World Championship from the track. You can tell from this screengrab, the effort was worth it as Martin and Hesjedal embrace.
