After an impressive start to the 2017 Tour de France which left him fourth in the overall standings, Dan Martin was in a solid position heading into stage nine.
It was the first mountain stage on the 2017 tour, which saw the riders go 181.5 km from Nantua to Chambery.
On the descent and going around 47mph, Richie Porte undercut a corner and went off the road into some rough. It caused him to tumble off his bike, back onto the road and into Dan Martin. The pair then careered into trees on the other side of the road.
The nasty crash can be seen below:

One of the worst crashes I've seen in Tour de France. Porte lost it at a corner, brought down Martin.

There has been a huge crash involving Richie Porte and Dan Martin. We will bring you more as we get it but our thoughts are with Porte.

Martin was able to get back onto his bike, but Porte stayed down to receive treatment for about five minutes or so. He has since regained consciousness.
Earlier in the stage, Geraint Thomas crashed and suffered a suspected broken collarbone, which ruled him out of the Tour.
