Cricket World Cup Quarter Final and how we get there
With Ireland losing to India this morning, we look at how we can still qualify for the quarter finals. Unlike previous years, the next round becomes straight knock-out as opposed to the previously used 'super eight' round robin format. Our remaining game;
v. Pakistan March 15th 3.30am
The table stands as follows;
Most likely path to quarters - Beat Pakistan
If Ireland beat Pakistan, we will end up on eight points, which will be good enough to see us through to the Cricket World Cup quarter final.
Pakistan are in all sorts of trouble. They have been hit by multiple scandals and controversies of late although do still have good players, the brilliantly nicknamed Boom Boom Afridi amongst them. They started the World Cup on horrific form but have slowly built up some steam, we face them at a difficult time.
They have visited Dublin since the last World Cup, with one game rained off, Ireland had them on the ropes at 17-4 in the other and looked set for their first ever series win over a full test nation. Pakistan had other ideas however and eventually won comfortably. The Irish will be confident of beating them, we will go in as clear underdogs but the odds won't aren't quite as long as they were against the Windies.
Current odds - Ireland 7/2, Pakistan 1/4
Not very likely - The UAE beats The West Indies
If the UAE beat The West Indies (10pm Fri), Ireland and Pakistan would go through. Many would argue it would be the greatest shock in World Cup history and the odds reflect that, with The UAE 10/1 to win. The Windies are 1/33.
Cross your fingers and pray - Rain
If Ireland's match with Pakistan is rained off, they will both finish on seven points and both will go through. The chances are slim.
If we're going to hope for rain then your dancing may be better directed at Napier on Sunday (h/t Colm Doyle). If UAE and the Windies is rained off, Ireland would go through. Rain is forecasted but the consistency needed for a game to be rained off is rare. Still, it's possible.
What about NRR?
Net Run Rate is out of the equation now. As Ireland have the worst NRR of The West Indies, Pakistan and ourselves, there is no scenario in which it could see us through.
It will however knock us out should both Pakistan and The Windies win their games, with us all finishing on six points.
Two surprises, Pakistan beating South Africa and The Windies hammering Pakistan greatly damaged Ireland's chances of getting through.
