The English press have got to the bottom of the story of David Warner's punch on Joe Root in Birmingham's Walkabout bar. According to various reports, Warner took exception to the young England batsman wearing a green and gold wig.
Warner is believed to have tried to tear the wig off Root’s face then landed a “glancing blow” on the 22-year-old’s chin before team-mates dragged him away.
Allegedly the Australian opener felt Root was imitating South African batsmen Hashim Amla (below) who was not present at the bar.
England and Wales Cricket Board 'insiders' have strongly denied that suggestion. Their explanation is that Root was wearing the wig as a beard as part of a joke with teammates who claimed he couldn't grow one.
Unsurprisingly it has also been reported that Warner was served both Jägerbombs and vodka Red Bulls at the bar.
Warner was dropped for Australia's Champion's Trophy match against New Zealand yesterday and faced a Cricket Australia hearing over the incident this evening.
UPDATED:
Warner has been suspended for the rest of the Champion's Trophy and will not be available until the first Test of the Ashes on the 10th of July.
