England were defeated in the second Test of this year's Ashes series, with Australia winning by a 43 run margin at Lord's.

It was nearly remembered for another legendary Ben Stokes innings, but the England captain was got out with his team still needing 70 runs.

The day will live long in the memory, however, for the controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow, after he wandered casually out of his crease, believing the ball to be dead, before being stumped by wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

It created a very hostile atmosphere in the ground, with Australia captain Pat Cummins booed relentlessly, while David Warner and Usman Khawaja were confronted by Lord's members during the break for lunch.

On social media, many England fans were incredibly salty over the decision, and cried that it was 'against the spirit of the game'.

“I think, to take the whole situation into consideration, the first thing that needs to be said is that it is out,” said captain Stokes when asked about the incident.

“The things I had to consider out there was the fact it was the last ball of the over and I very shortly questioned the umpires as to whether they had called over,

“Both umpires were making the gesture walking towards their opposite position. Jonny was in his crease, then left his crease to come out and have the conversation between overs like every batsman does.

“If I was fielding captain at the time, I would have put a lot more pressure on the umpires to ask them what their decision was around the ‘over’.

“Then I would have had a real think about the spirit of the game and would I want to potentially win a game with something like that happening. It would be no.”

However, fans have also pointed out that Bairstow attempted to catch Marnus Labuschagne out in a similar fashion two days ago.
