Irish Olympic silver medalist Wayne McCullough has told Henry McKean of Newstalk that he would have loved to have joined the UFC if he'd had the chance during his career.
Although the UFC was founded in the early 90s, it certainly wasn't the ubiquitous force it has come to be today, so it never would have even showed up on the likes of McCullough's radar. However, he told McKean that had he been aware of it, it certainly would have been something he'd have like to be involved with, albeit he sounds a little tongue-in-cheek.
I definitely would have went to the UFC, there's no question about it - because you can actually hold someone and hit them at the same time. In boxing, when some one runs away, you cant hit them.
McCullough also revealed how he almost ended up training Conor McGregor before the Chad Mendes fight.
They thought I was there [Las Vegas] and I was going to go to the training camp and spar with him. So I would love to spar with him and teach him some of the methods I was taught by my coach.
The Belfastman thinks McGregor needs all the advice he can get, 'It's hard to get to the top but it's harder to stay there.'
McCullough was in good spirits in a really interesting interview with McKean, ahead of the homecoming of Team Ireland from this year's Special Olympics. You can listen to the whole thing here and it's well worth checking out.
