There is disappointing news in this morning's Irish Daily Star for boxing fans, the paper is claiming that Andy Lee will forego a title defence of his WBO middleweight belt in Dublin for the sake of a bigger purse in New York. Chicago-based fighter Peter Quillin will be Lee's opponent and the fight will be aired live on NBC.
The purse is set at $1m, three to four times what he would have received fighting in Dublin so it is hard to begrudge him his decision. New York has a significant Irish population so it is likely Lee will have the backing of the majority of the crowd, despite fighting in his opponent's home nation.
Quillin was the WBO middleweight title holder previous to Lee, but he vacated the title in September of last year.
