I think Abdin has been given the round on all three scorecards, which is a surprise.
That was the reaction of the AIBA stream commentator at the end of the first round between Michael O'Reilly and Hosam Abdin. From there, the fight continued in a similar fashion.
Portlaoise fighter O'Reilly was facing his Egyptian opponent in the third-placed box-off at the World Championships for a guaranteed place at next summer's Olympics.
The Irishman was clearly the superior fighter (you can watch the bout at the bottom of the page) but the first two rounds were scored in favour of Abdin - on all three judges' scorecards. O'Reilly did win the third round, but it was immaterial by then.
Towards the end the fight, the co-commentator sympathised with O'Reilly's position.
O'Reilly would think he's got this and I'd understand why.
The middleweight clearly did believe he'd won, just watch his reaction below.
Speaking on Off The Ball on Wednesday night, O'Reilly's coach Billy Walsh voiced his displeasure with the result.
I'm astounded to be honest with you. There's a young man, his opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games, who's done tremendously well this year and is poised to finish in the top four in the world, and it's been taken away from him, wrongly in my opinion.
He was not the only one involved with Irish boxing who was astonished either.
Disgusting judging there in first round #Doha2015 O Reilly won that 1st round

Just left a distraught Michael O'Reilly. He is sickened and disgusted by the judges decision. Cannot understand how he lost it.

Zaur's Facebook says it all. 'Absolutely disgraced by judges decision. Michael won all 3 rounds and they robbed him first 2....disgraceful'

Just off the phone with a rather chuffed Billy Walsh. Not a happy man about Michael O'Reilly's result, however - "a disgrace".
