Much of the to and fro on Floyd Mayweather's boxing match with Conor McGregor has been braggadocio and conjecture, but amid all the posturing, there has been some concrete news. Last month, for example, McGregor announced that he had reached an agreement with his bosses at the UFC that would allow him cross sports for a shot at the 49-0 Mayweather.
Gavan Casey of this parish explained why there was a lot more to do to agree to the fight, given Mayweather's talent at driving a hard bargain.
That appears to be done and dusted, however, with an Instagram post from McGregor in the last few minutes confirming the news, albeit with an accompanying picture of Floyd Mayweather Snr.
McGregor Mayweather date
This post is consistent with reports in the Vegas media earlier today.
Multiple reports in the U.S., including one by respected boxing journalist Kevin Iole, claims that the fight has been agreed, and will take place on August 26th in Las Vegas, at either the MGM Grand or the T-Mobile Arena. Iole writes for Yahoo Sports that the Nevada Athletic Commission today approved Mayweather's request to host a boxing event at the MGM Grand on the date in question, while allowing for the possibility it is switched to the T-Mobile Arena.
The same report says that McGregor would confirm the news on social media by tonight - as he seemingly just has.
The Las Vegas Review Journal, the state's largest newspaper, report the same, with the added dimension of an official announcement arriving some tonight, likely to be the early hours of Thursday morning Irish time.
So while the venue is likely to be the MGM Grand, or possibly the T-Mobile Arena, it seems certain the McGregor Mayweather date will be Saturday August 26.
UPDATE:
Mayweather has now confirmed it, too:
Hold on to your hats...
