A 15-year-old female boxer from Mullingar was taken to hospital due to an incident at the Irish team hotel following the Queens Cup in Germany.
Mary Kate Nevin, the Irish junior captain, won gold and was named Best Boxer at the event on Saturday.
Later that day, the young boxer was making her with to another room in the hotel, 'giggling and laughing' when a Russian trainer emerged from his room, apparently annoyed by the noise.
Bernie Harold, the Irish team manager, spoke to Independent.ie about the incident.
They were all put to bed, the coaches were downstairs having a cup of coffee and that's when it happened.
Mary Kate and another girl went to get a drink of coke from another girl in another room.
This man came out of the room and he punched her in the eye.
Nevin was taken to a hospital where staff attended to her and felt she was in sufficient condition to return to the hotel.
Harold added that the incident has been reported to the German police and that they will investigate.
We are absolutely appalled by what happened. We have reported it to the police in Germany and they will be pursuing it. The IABA [Irish Athletic Boxing Association], the Russian Federation and the world body will be investigating it.
The Irish team has since returned home. Harold added that Nevin was 'good' despite the ordeal.
