John Joe Nevin has made a surprising announcement that he will be returning to the ring this weekend.
The Olympic silver medalist will make his comeback in the Ring of Dreams in North Carolina on Saturday after a six months absence from the sport. Nevin had severe leg breaks after being assaulted in Mullingar while trying to break up a fight between his uncle and his uncle's sons. Thankfully, the Golden Boy of Irish boxing appears to be back fighting fit.
It's been the hardest six months of my life, sitting there unable to do anything, watching boxing on the television. Thankfully, I now have the chance to do it all again on Saturday night.
When the doctors told me I might not box again it was frightening, but I worked hard, kept my head down and stuck with my team and they stuck with me.
I'm putting the last six months behind me and looking ahead to my future. Everything is back in place and I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to Saturday night.
The chief of Nevin's team GreenBlood, Tom Moran, confessed that Nevin is looking more than ready to start fighting again. He has no worries that the injury has hindered his abilities as a boxer.
I said 'prove to me in the gym that you are ready' and he did. He looks terrific.
We all want to see him back and feeling good about himself. I know he's ready and this is the perfect way to get started again.
In the next few weeks we'll look at some more high-profile opponents, but for now everybody is just looking forward to seeing John Joe back in the ring.
Exciting times ahead.
